  • Maureen Hughes

    FEATURED ARTIST (Art On Display)

Dr. Maureen Hughes is a lifetime artist, selling her first work at the age of 13. At the age of 17 she decided to pursue an education in the sciences, rather than going to art school, and at 27 received her doctorate from Washington University in St. Louis in 2003. She started creating beaded jewelry while in grad school. In 2010, she started painting again, starting with the OM symbol which was deeply related to her journey with yoga. She then went through a phase of highly abstract work, characterized by alternative reality landscapes. 2020 brought the pandemic and some other wonders coming out of her mind and onto the canvas. She has created a series of works she calls the "guilded cage". Her art is an extension of emotion, focusing more on color placement with her abstract works.

Featured Poem by Poet MCKAYLEY HOPKINS “SILENT SIREN”

“Janedo”

She’s twenty-something

Trying to find her name, trying to get a sense of heaven when her mind is running through the flames

Keeps a smile on her face but yet worried about the next bill to be paid

College book in her face but her mind is in a daze In the sky

Wondering what she's truly there for and asking

God why? Is this what I really want to do?

When's my time to fly?

Got some insecurities but still puts on the face of a queen

Wake up every day chasing a ghost called a dream

Yet still post on social media, pretending that things aren't what they seem

Daddy left scars she can’t heal away

So she soaks in the love of men that are never bound to stay

The drugs, the sex, and the partying kept a smile on her face

Sin on a saturday all so she can go to church and repent the next day

College halls filled with echos of doubt

She's continuously living asking, “what's life all about”?

Is she meant to have a purpose more than the emotional scars she shows?

Or will she be stuck in the abyss of, nobody knows?

But due to her faith, she believes

That there is nobody greater than him that is in me

Janedo isn’t a lost soul but a soul being grown

A soul stuck in the maze of becoming her own
