Featured Poem by Poet Kristen Harris/Kmoney the Poet
“A Smile I Fought for”
I had to surrender it all
Give it all to God, it’s odd
that originally I thought I could do it on my own
But since I’m
Grateful, blessed and humble always
in all ways
for blessings in big and small ways
in hallways
I’ve traveled, linking letters and lingo, like bingo, this scrabble
I just do it so nicely, I’m Nike and nightly
I tell tunes w/a twist, grip my dreams so tightly
A sight be
to see me perform,
On fire I blaze trails, a smoke show, don’t be alarmed
Mouth molds magic, so they say that I’m charmed
Armed in God’s armor, so even if I fail
It’s safe
& even if I bend won’t break, and even if I lose I win in this case
Cause it’s my life, my story, God’s glory, my race
I persevered, pressed on even when I was pressed on, pushed forward when I was pushed down and kicked butt when I was kicked around
I am resilience and I want you to know you are too
Your life is not limited to experiences you’ve lived through, you are more than your toughest battles, more than your worst days
But how you handle those situations and navigate that maze
When you see those setbacks as setups for comebacks and come ups no clapbacks cause you getup and get back in your bag
& darkness descends, cause if I spark a match and the flame doesn’t catch, then heck yeah, I’m gone reignite it again
And again and again and again
Til I win, and you too hold that same power within
You value yourself more
& you become more grateful casually at your core
cause this wasn’t given, it’s a smile I fought for …
